Fishing in Vancouver has been good! July 2021 UpdateWell it is safe to say that the fishing season is now full steam ahead! After battling Covid issues and politically motivated fisheries restrictions, things have ramped up and opened up a bit in the Vancouver fishing scene! This past July has been one of our better ones in recent memory for fishing consistency. The reason for this is the good numbers of pink salmon in local waters on our half day/8 hour trips and good numbers of chinook salmon on our 10 hour trips!
Off the South End of Bowen Island, good numbers of pink salmon have been milling about and schooling. These bright chrome fish are in the 3 to 6 pound range and have been putting smiles on many faces in recent weeks. Trolling smaller pink sockeye style hootchies or glow/pink hootchies like the Yamashita Raspberry Ripple has been productive. Try trolling the tide lines off the South End of Bowen Island. 50 to 90 feet on the downriggers using Oki Phantom and Gibbs Guide Series flashers in green and chartreuse patterns has been a great bet! These pink salmon are the early run and are primarily fish that are bound for the Squamish, Indian and Seymour Rivers. The Fraser Pinks will not show until later in August and into mid September, so lots more to come! We have also seen a few coho around as well. Mainly off Bowen Island and West Vancouver!
On our 10 hour trips, when weather allows, we have had consistent results fishing the east side of Gabriola Island for chinook. Chinook are open for retention for 1 fish per day under 80cm. On August 1st, a few more areas open up, including a small section of the West Vancouver shoreline. In September, the Fraser Mouth opens for chinook for 2 per day, any size.
We are VERY busy and most weekends are full or close to full until mid September. Weekdays are filling up as well. If you are looking to get out over the next couple months, especially on weekends, please reach out sooner the later.
